BLENDE STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHITHERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES AND VIRTUES

HISTORY OF BLENDE STONE

Derived from the Greek name “sphaleros” which means “treacherous”, due to the possibility of confusing it with galena, Blende stone has been mentioned many times: in 1546 (Georgius Agricola), in 1747 (Wallerius), in 1782 (Torbern Olof Bergman). It was then described in 1847 by the German mineralogist Ernst Friedrich Glocker.

Specialists give it the name of “sphalerite” from 1870 but the name of “blende”, which had been attributed to it by German miners, will also be kept. Its dispersion (0.156) is more than 3 times higher than that of diamonds (0.044). Its characteristic colour, reminiscent of that of honey, owed it the name of “blende honey” in Spain.

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF BLENDE STONE

Part of the sulphide family, Blende stone is very rich in zinc because it is the result of the crystallization of zinc sulphide. The different shapes and aspects of this rock make it a particularly sought-after and coveted mineral. Blende’s gem quality is highly prized by collectors but also by jewellers. Indeed, sphalerite is a relatively soft rock and can prove to be brittle in case of a lack of precision and experience. The rock can undergo different cutting phases to give it a positive emission. As a result, this mineral, correctly cut, can be of great rarity and thus become highly sought after by specialists and experts.

Depending on the composition of its crystal lattice and the different amounts of cadmium, gallium, iron or manganese it contains, Blende stone can have a wide range of colours. Christophite or marmatite are varieties containing a large quantity of iron compared to the other varieties of this stone model and thus offer a particularly dark colour with brown and black shades. Integrated into the hexagonal crystal system, the wurtzite structure, which originates from the mineral wurtzite, corresponds to a variety of rocks derived from the same sulphide as blende. This rock, in its pure state, has the capacity to crystallize in various centimetric forms similar to those of tetrahedron or dodecahedron in particular. Such purity can give this rock an orange, red, yellow or reddish brown colour. The rarity of blende is also linked to the relatively high refractive index it has, which is close to that of diamonds. Cut into fine stones, the beautiful crystals can reach a diameter equivalent to about 10 centimetres depending on the sampling phase. These crystals, highly sought-after, come mainly from the mountains of Europe (Asturias in Spain) and the mines of Mexico (Chivera). There are several varieties of sphalerites, the best known of which are cleiophane (low in manganese and iron) and marmatite (high in iron).

LITHOTHERAPEUTIC VIRTUES AND PROPERTIES OF BLENDE STONE

BLENDE STONE’S PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS

This stone has recognized virtues for certain people. Indeed, many specialists do not hesitate to affirm that this mineral could, according to its colour, bring certain beneficial properties to the person possessing it. Therefore, a brown to grey tint would give the possibility to stabilize the mind and balance the emotional system, and a yellowish transparency would bring joy and happiness. Used against exhaustion, weakness or memory lapses, this particular rock is an effective way to strengthen the immune system and improve brain capacity.

BLENDE STONE’S PHYSICAL BENEFITS

This rock offers a wide range of benefits for the physical body. Among others, it gives local solutions for skin problems, for regulating carbohydrates and for strengthening the basic functions of the intestine. Zinc is an important local element in the mineral composition of Blende stone. improving the absorption of proteins and carbohydrates in various phases. It is also associated with fungicidal (destruction of parasitic fungi) and antibacterial properties.

In conclusion, blende allows a positive emission in the body, a purification of the immune system, an alleviation of intestinal disorders, a local neuronal stimulation and provides many other such benefits to improve health and well-being. Despite the mineral’s numerous benefits, it is not a complete substitute for pure medicine and is only an external complement.
