BLOOD JASPER STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHOTHERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES AND VIRTUES

HISTORY OF BLOOD JASPER STONE

Long considered to be the most beautiful variety of Jasper, Blood Jasper stone is also known as Heliotrope Jasper or Blood Stone. It is a stone whose colour varies from black to dark green. It is decorated with dots that can be yellow, white, but more generally red. It is known and venerated by men since ancient times. It is said, for example, that blood jasper was used in Ancient Egypt in the form of amulets to increase the strength of warriors and give the wearer protection against witchcraft. The Babylonians, for their part, used it to invoke the rain that was so precious to their crops and to control the winds to save their ships from storms. Pliny the Elder, the great Roman writer and naturalist of the first century A.D., explains in his Encyclopaedia of Natural History the origin of heliotrope stone’s name, saying that when placed in a vase filled with water, it gave blood-coloured lustres under yellow sunlight. He also reports that magi claimed that it had the power to make them invisible.

The Greeks were convinced that this stone would restore peace between the water and the Gods of the Earth and that whoever wore it would be blessed with a long and prosperous life. A legend dating back to the Middle Ages still tells that blood jasper stone came from the blood of Jesus’s wounds, which would have mixed with the earth at the foot of the cross. At the same time, under this aura of mystery and divinity, the stone was used to stop bleeding, heal tumours or suck the venom from the body of someone who had been bitten by a snake. Today, still very popular, this mineral is used in lithotherapy for its multiple virtues.

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF BLOOD JASPER STONE

Blood Jasper is a variety of chalcedony, a mineral composed of silica. It is, moreover, rich in chlorite from which it gets its green colour and also contains an iron oxide, hematite, which gives it its red spots.

There are heliotrope deposits all over the world. Each one is different and provides stones of unique quality. The most important deposits are located on the island of Madagascar and in Brazil, but they are also found in India, Australia, China and the United States.
