CHALCOPYRITE STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHOTHERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES AND VIRTUES

HISTORY OF CHALCOPYRITE STONE

Identified in 1725 by Henckel, chalcopyrite stone takes its name from the Greek word “Chalco”, which describes pyrite and copper. However, if you study its structure, you can see that it looks rather like sphalerite. For large deposits, you should know that they come from a hydrothermal origin. Containing a small amount of gold, chalcopyrite becomes a mined rock thanks to the presence of this metal.

Many researchers have conducted experiments with the stone. When it is enclosed in a tube and then heated, it produces sublimed sulphur. By increasing the heating temperature, the stone turns into a magnetic globule. If you decide to attack the solution with nitric acid and sulphur deposit, it will turn green, then changes into blue-green.

Chalcopyrite, with a lustre and colour reminiscent of gold, has been confused with pyrite by miners. Driven by desperation and misunderstanding during the gold rush, these miners could no longer discern the two minerals. What they did not know at the time was that this type of rock contains a trace of the precious metal, since gold and arsenic are the main elements that make up the structure of this rock.

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF CHALCOPYRITE STONE

LThe main components of this rock are bronze, double sulphide and iron. However, it is the double sulphide that holds the highest percentage with 35%, without forgetting the trace of Au, In, Ag, Tl, Te, Se. Regarding its wide range of bright colours, this aspect of the crystal comes from the presence of Iron and Copper sulphate (CuFeS2) that it contains. Among the colour varieties, you can identify electric blue, purple, silvery grey and sometimes green and orange. As for the hardness of this rock, it is more or less resistant with its quadratic crystalline system. On Mohs scale, its hardness level reaches 3.5 to 4. If the bronze content of this rock is more imposing in its composition, it is often called copper pyrite.

For those who are looking for the most beautiful varieties, they can go to Slovakia, where the chalcopyrite rocks originate. In general, minerals from this part of the world are composed of Quartz and white crystals of Magnesite. This particular quartz has a characteristic that can combine with the chalcopyrite line to give it its exceptional beauty. On the other hand, we can find this type of mineral in deposits such as those in the United States, Spain, South Africa and Slovakia.
