HYPERSTHENE STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHOTHERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES AND VIRTUES

HISTORY OF HYPERSTHENE STONE

Hypersthene is a common name derived from ancient Greek. Etymologically, “hyper” means “over”. Sthenos refers to strength, power and endurance. Since 1988, the IMA (International Mineralogical Association) has discredited this name. This stone belongs to the pyroxene family along with aegirine, jadeite, spodumene and diopside. Hypersthene stone contains iron and magnesium. It belongs more precisely to the orthopyroxene family where it is located between enstatite and ferrosilite, whose chemical composition is free of these two natural elements.

In his Traité de Minéralogie written in 1801, the mineralogist and crystallographer Abbé René Just Haüy (1743-1822) mentioned the first samples of this mineral. They came from Labrador, the province located in the extreme northeastern part of Canada. For many years, this was the only known and studied deposit. Initially, the stone was named “labradorite hornblende”. It was named in memory of the region where it was discovered and the generic name of silicates. Before Haüy, the German geologist and mineralist Abraham Gottlob Werner had studied it and named it “paulite” in honour of the small island of St. Paul in Labrador. Unlike Werner, who had associated paulite with amphibole, Haüy demonstrated that it was a new species and named it “Hypersthene”. Other deposits were discovered in England and Greenland.

In the Amerindian lands located in south-western British Columbia (Canada), at the foot of Mount Cayley, a legend has its roots in the black colour of this rock with opaline inclusions. The mountains are dark and jagged. According to the Squamish people, one of the native Amerindian peoples, this colour and shape are due to the lightning of Thunderbird, the legendary bird producing thunder and lightning. In Squamish, the original language of the Amerindians, the territory is called T’ak’t’ak mu’yin tl’a in7in’a’xe7en. This language is only oral and began to be transcribed around 1880 by many linguists and anthropologists. The number 7 can be replaced by the symbol “?”. This unusual symbol indicates a glottal stop characteristic of the Squamish spoken language. The translation refers to the “landing place of the bird that produces thunder”, the legend of the mythical creature of the First Nations of the North American continent, the Thunderbird.

The supernatural forces of the mythical bird are capable of causing gigantic storms of thunder and lightning with a single flap of its wings. The mountains made of hypersthene stones are legendary lands for these peoples. Sacred, they have an important role. In this region, the Garibaldi Belt experienced a strong volcanic activity and gave birth to various peaks including Mount Cayley, a volcano now dormant. These mountains are essentially made up of magmatic stones with high iron content : hypersthene stone is one of them. This rock is a silicate of volcanic or meteorite origin. The deposits are located on the North American (Canada and USA), Asian (Japan), Oceanian (Australia) and European (France and more precisely in Auvergne) continents.

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF HYPERSTHENE STONE

Magnesium and iron silicate are the main components of hypersthene stone. These elements make it possible to differentiate it from enstatite. Just like augite, this natural stone belongs to the inosilicate family within the pyroxene group. It has dark colour, ranging from brown to black. In Madagascar, the inhabitants compare it to tar because of its dull appearance. On close inspection, it shows all its silvery-grey iridescent reflections. Today, just as when it was discovered, Canada offers the most beautiful gems. According to Mohs scale, its hardness varies between 5 and 6. This high hardness earned it its name. Its dark appearance has many star-shaped reflections. This gemstone is a favourite among jewellers thanks to its changing colours according to the inclination.

In its natural state in deposits, this mineral is often accompanied with labradorite and olivine. Its origin can be volcanic or meteorite. In Ontario, Canada, a deposit is made at the point of impact of a meteorite. The Apollo program has identified a significant amount of it within lunar rocks.

LITHOTHERAPEUTIC VIRTUES AND PROPERTIES OF HYPERSTHENE STONE

LLithotherapy is an unconventional therapeutic method that uses the benefits of crystals and minerals to alleviate ailments of the body and mind. The diversity of the elements used is attracting more and more followers. Based on the energetic influence, this alternative medicine uses the following principle: each stone has a particular energy that will act in depth on the individual. Its field of action depends on where the user places it on the body. It is advisable to place the stone on an inner chakra to activate a specific benefit on the psychological or physical level. In case of prolonged symptoms or feelings of persisting discomfort, a medical consultation with a doctor or even a specialist is essential in order to obtain more precise information.

HYPERSTHENE STONE’S PHYSICAL BENEFITS

L’Hypersthene stone is rich in magnesium. This trace element is responsible for muscle and tendon pain if it is deficient. Once placed at the level of the chakra of the solar plexus, the stone will be an ally against this type of pain. This mineral-rich volcanic stone is the friend of athletes. Because of its draining action, it also ensures the elimination of toxins from the body. It soothes spasms due to stomach acidity after meals with too acidic pH. Every digestive organ is thoroughly cleansed. Toxins leave the body. The liver, intestines and stomach are freed of toxins due to pollution and a diet that is not always healthy. A feeling of fullness and lightness appears. The body is regenerated. The respiratory system becomes uncluttered, the lungs are freed: the body breathes better, oxygenation is effective. The draining virtues associated with those of bronzite relieve benign gastric pain by acting as an efficient antispasmodic. The acidity of the stomach is regulated. Its ferritin content supports the body’s activity in case of blood system disorders. The urinary and reproductive systems are also supported (ovaries and prostate).

Black and iridescent, hypersthene which comes from volcanic activity, acts as a protective and purifying stone. It gives the solar plexus an invaluable power. Hyperactivity, fear and discouragement give way to courage, self-confidence and determination. Once introspection is facilitated, burnout is swept away. It improves emotional management and empathy in the face of criticism and negative energies. Relationships with others are a priority of its plan of action. Physically, the digestive, cardiovascular and urinary systems are cleansed and relieved. Their functioning improves.
