KUNZITE STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHOTHERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES AND VIRTUES

HISTORY OF KUNZITE STONE

George Frederick Kunz will discover in 1902 a stone hitherto unknown that he decided to name Kunzite. It was during his research in California that he made this incredible discovery. Kunz was passionate about gems at a very young age. He carried out a lot of work leading to the discovery of a new gem, Kunzite stone. The gem with pink reflections was at first confused with tourmaline, but by continuing the analyses, Kunz succeeded in demonstrating that it was a colour still unexploited and unknown in mineralogical references. It was Professor Charles Baskerville who decided on the official name of the gem as a tribute to the person who had discovered it.

Around the 1950s, Kunzite literally caught the eye of jewelers. Its natural colour and brilliance were showcased through various collections in the western world. It is a jewel that became fashionable and enjoyed triumphant success. Whether used as ornamental stones or as a decorative object, it unveiled numerous psychological and physical virtues and properties. Also known as Californian iris, Kunzite is a colourful variety of spodumene, rich in lithium.

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF KUNZITE STONE

Belonging to the family of silicates, it is a spodumene derivative with a high concentration of lithium. Nevertheless, it is a rare stone due to its composition and characteristics. The intensity of its shade varies depending on its manganese content. Usually found in pink, its light will increase if its manganese concentration is higher. Like most other silicates, this stone is sensitive to temperature variations. It is possible to vary its shade by making it much brighter, simply by increasing the temperature. Like quartz, the different shades will begin to appear under the light spectrum. Even if it is very appreciated by jewellers, Kunzite remains a difficult stone to work with because of its fragility. It is therefore difficult to fix it correctly as it may be damaged. Moreover, this stone will lose its colour when exposed to the sun. It remains very sensitive to all light variations. Most of the deposits are located in the south-east of Brazil, but other quality stones are also extracted in Madagascar, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Although the mineral has been found in California, deposits in this region are rather rare.

The discovery of the stone took place in the modern era, so it is not attached to any particular myth, but the same cannot be said for its outstanding hue associated with femininity par excellence. It is a highly romantic colour associated with love and love stories, which is why the stone is strongly used in esotericism and other disciplines to reinforce energy points between body and feelings. The value of Kunzite is set according to the brightness and shades of its hues. The darker is the shade of the stone, the higher will be its value. We talk about pink, purple or red-purple. The stone benefits from excellent phosphorescence, meaning that under low light, it will shine naturally. Another remarkable element is that it has a strong pleochroism, depending on the angle from which the stone is viewed, the intensity will vary.

  • There are several varieties that are very characteristic for their brilliant hue: Patroke stone with a very bright and deep colour approaching Lilac.
  • The Champagne hue originates from Brazil. It oscillates between pink and yellow.
  • The mint shade which, as its name suggests, will draw towards green shades.
  • The white variety has a colour close to white but tending slightly towards pale pink.
