HISTORY OF PURPURITE STONE

Its name derives from the Latin word « purpura » (purple) and has been recognized by the IMA. Discovered in 1905 by Louis Caryl Graton and Théodore Schaller, this mineral was named so because of its particular and striking colour, reminiscent of purple (violet). Purpurite stone, a rare stone, was discovered only 100 years ago. It is not connected to any legend.

Opaque and satin-like, purpurite stone’s colour ranges from pink to red, purple, crimson, violet and reddish. It can sometimes display an iridescent appearance and pleochroism. After alteration, it becomes brown and even black due to manganese oxidation reaction. Manganese gives purpurite its colour.

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF PURPURITE STONE

Purpurite stone is composed of iron phosphate and manganese. Its crystal system is orthorhombic. Its hardness varies between 4 and 4.5.
Its mains deposits are found in Namibia. However, the stone is also found in the United States (in South Dakota), Australia, South Africa, Madagascar, France and Portugal (Guarda Region). More rarely, it can be found in Rwanda, Austria, China, Sweden and Spain.
