QUARTZ STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHOTHERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES AND VIRTUES

HISTORY OF QUARTZ STONE

Rock crystal, also known as “Quartz”, is a mineral found on all continents, which explains its omnipresence in cultural traditions around the world. Ancient Greek philosophers, such as Theophrastus, believed that this stone was a variety of ice so cold that it could not thaw. Thanks to this belief, we have been able to understand the etymology of the name “crystal”. In ancient Greek, “krystallos”, means “ice”. Each ancient culture gave a particular meaning to this mineral, which dates back to prehistoric times. In Japan, scholars believed it symbolized space, purity and patience. More surprisingly, the elders believed it was alive, breathing once every hundred years or so. Many cultures regarded it as the earthly embodiment of the Divine. Native North American cultures, in particular, also treated it as a sentient being and offered it food and gifts. In Australia and South America, it was closely associated with creation myths. For the Aboriginals, it continues to be the instrument of choice for shamans. It is strongly associated with the powers of vision.

For the inhabitants of Central and South America, such as the indigenous peoples of Brazil, it was considered to be a vessel. The spirits of the ancestors were placed in pure crystal urns. It could also be carved into the shape of a skull and was used as an amulet. In Scotland and Ireland, crystals were carved into spheres. According to popular belief, these crystals were endowed with metaphysical powers to cure cow diseases. Finally, the Egyptians used them during funeral rites, especially during the passage of souls. They placed it on the third eye chakra to help the spirit of the dead pass into the other side.

In addition, its commercial dimension is very important, as it is the origin of the production of a wide variety of jewellery. It should be noted that the gems are impure, because they are Quartz with inclusions. Some of them can lose their coloration in contact with the sunlight. According to an American site specialized in gemology : “some gems can lose their color saturation over a period of time in daylight.”

It is sometimes synthesized by the electronics industry for commercial purposes, as it is the material from which most of the key components of our devices, such as smartphones, computers, televisions and cameras, are made. Synthetic Quartz is made by recrystallizing its natural foundation to obtain a new crystal with fewer impurities. Whether it is monocrystalline, microcrystalline, natural or partially synthetic, it possesses exceptional powers, which litho therapists have been able to take advantage of. The knowledge of its virtues has thus crossed the centuries, and will undoubtedly stay.

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF QUARTZ STONE

Its chemical composition was discovered by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius in 1823. It is a siliceous rock, so its chemical formula is SiO2. Like many silicas, such as flint, its fracture is conchoidal. Moreover, it is very hard (7 on Mohs scale), and is very resistant to erosion. You might be able to take a picture of it while walking on the beach !

The most exploited deposits are found in Brazil, the United States, France, Austria and Madagascar. Nevertheless, it is found everywhere and in almost all types of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic and magmatic. In gemology, experts have distinguished two forms of crystal. When it consists of a single large crystal, it is monocrystalline, whereas if it is composed of dense and compact aggregates of microscopic crystals, it is microcrystalline. Examples include agate and chert, citrine, pink and smoky quartz, and tiger’s eye. The various “microcrystalline” stypes are generally grouped as chalcedony, although this term has a stricter definition in the scientific literature. It should be mentioned that chalcedony contains small amounts of another polymorph SiO2, morganite. It is therefore not always pure.

It can take many configurations and colours, including black, yellow, green or pink. More variety names are attributed to it than to any other mineral! If it is purple, for example, we speak of amethyst, while if it is yellow, it will be citrine. Nothing is more impressive than the brilliance of the colours of this type of rock, which even stands out in photographs. However, the name “Quartz” sis confusing. In reality, when pure, it is milky white and consists of individual crystals or aggregates of transparent crystals. We are therefore far from the image of rock with vivid colours, such as amethyst! If the crystal has inclusions, it may be rich in iron, which is not the case in its pure state. Amethyst is again a perfect example, as its hue is due to traces of iron.

In addition, the well-crystallized ones are usually composed of six-sided prisms with steep pyramidal endings. They can be truncated, elongated or acicular, i.e. they have the appearance of needles. The term acicular derives from the Latin word “acicula”, meaning “small needle”. In most environments, they are attached to the host mineral and have a single point, but double-terminated crystals also exist. These are often twins. The most famous form of twinning is the Japanese twin, where two crystals meet at a 90° angle.

LITHOTHERAPEUTIC VIRTUES AND PROPERTIES OF QUARTZ STONE

QUARTZ STONE’S PHSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS

It’s the queen of lithotherapy ! Quartz stone is not used like any other rock, because it acts as an amplifier. It is ideal to amplify the powers of another spiritual accessory, with which it will make synergy. Associated with the tiger’s eye, which is a protection gem, its strength will be multiplied: it represents an additional shield against theft or any type of aggression. The same applies for the other rocks. Its ability to be programmed is one of its numerous qualities. It is a relevant gift for loved ones who are embarking on spiritual journeys, but who have some reservations. Indeed, it is intended for so-called Cartesian people, stubborn and entrenched in their ideas, because it opens to new concepts. For more experienced people, know that it has no dedicated chakra. It is used on all chakras, in order to reopen and energize them. Such versatility makes it a “generic”, “neutral” instrument. It is indeed used on all astrological signs and has no dedicated sign.

For people prone to dizziness, it is advisable to use it with a gem having black tourmaline inclusions, in order to stabilize the powerful energy that emanates from it. Black tourmaline is frequently used by therapists to stabilize the crystal. This balancing is essential, as its amplifying powers also apply to bad moods. However, if it is well mastered, this stone develops psychic abilities, as it opens the coronal canal and the third eye. It also amplifies the intention programmed into it and the vibration: in a meditation room, for example, it increases the vibratory rate. Its place should be chosen carefully. If it is placed in an area that absorbs a lot of negative energy (this can be the workplace), it should be cleaned regularly.

It is purified with very lightly salted water or with incense, for a few hours, and is recharged in the sun. It should be noted that the smaller it is, the more it needs to be cleaned, as it risks absorbing too much negative energy. Nevertheless, it can recharge itself with other minerals. Finally, Quartz acts as a deep cleanser of the soul, purifying the body from within and the subtle bodies to connect the physical body to the spirit. It focuses on inner negativity and stimulates positive thoughts and feelings instead. It increases consciousness and clarity of thought, and provides increased energy, perseverance and patience. In short, it allows you to take your spiritual journey to the next level.

QUARTZ STONE’S PHYSICAL BENEFITS

It is a master healer’s rock, and can be used for any health condition. Specialists believe it stimulates the immune and circulatory systems, improves energy flow and balances the body’s energies. It is used to treat headaches, dizziness, motion sickness and regulates the metabolism. It combats exhaustion and promotes weight loss. For heavy smokers who find it difficult to quit, this mineral prevents the urge to smoke.

Elixirs containing Quartz remove toxins from the system and treat digestive disorders, kidney and bladder infections. In addition, it soothes painful or injured areas, especially burns, by relieving pain and eliminating blisters. A topical elixir is also beneficial in the treatment of skin disorders. Thanks to its action on the brain, it brings strength and clarity, promoting both concentration and memory elasticity. It also filters out any distractions. Its hypnotic nature is directly related to the quality of sleep it provides. During a deep sleep, it facilitates the understanding of messages and lessons conveyed during the dream state.
