SERAPHINITE STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHOTHERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES AND VIRTUES

HISTORY OF SERAPHINITE STONE

Also called « Chlorite jade » because of its green colour, seraphinite stone is a strangely beautiful mineral of the chlorite family. This extraordinary stone was only recently discovered by a renowned Russian mineralogist and crystallographer: Nikolai Ivanovich Koksharov (1818-1892). His research in mineralogy led him to become director of the « Imperial Mineralogical Society » of St. Petersburg in 1865. Seraphinite is actually a trade name given to the stone from a particular form of clinochlore. Rooted in the Christian tradition for a long time by the long silver filaments that run through it, this stone evokes a Seraph, a biblical creature with an important place in the heavens. The Seraph, who has three pairs of wings, is a celestial creature of high hierarchy, which is found in religious texts. They are referred to in the Bible as accompanying the throne of God or accompanying God’s heavenly chariot.

The angelic rock was identified in 1851 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, but it has since been discovered in other places in the United States. Although seraphinite stone is found in various countries, including Europe, the main deposits are in Russia. It is mined in an area near Lake Baikal and, more specifically, in an iron deposit near Korshunovskoye, a region in present-day Eastern Siberia. Chlorites are semi-precious gems that have been the object of ancient trade. The first known mention of a chlorite, in French, dates from 1578 in a work by Guy Le Fèvre de La Boderie: “L’harmonie du monde, divisée en trois cantiques ; œuvre singulier et plein d’admirable erudition”, 1578. He describes it as a « green coloured precious stone ».

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF SERAPHINITE STONE

A relatively rare variety of the chlorite family, these crystals with the chemical formula Al5(Si3Al)O10(OH)8 can vary from a light to dark greenish hue. These natural variations are due to the presence of micas which contribute greatly to its beauty and make seraphinite stone ua highly coveted object. Its shimmers have the particularity of having the shape of feathers, similar to those found on a bird’s wing. Chlorites are composed of magnesium aluminosilicate as well as iron, and are produced by various mineral reactions including the decomposition of black mica. This rock therefore does not contain chlorine, but only shares a common etymology derived from the Greek word “chloros” (green) in reference to its colour. Seraphinite also exists in a darker hue composed of copper inclusions and called « golden seraphinite ».

With a hardness ranging from 2 to 2.5 on Mohs scale, it is relatively soft and delicate, making it a precious rock often considered a collector’s item. As for its density, it varies between 2.55 and 2.75 in most cases and its refractive index is between 1.576 and 1.599. Chlorite’s structure is similar to that of mica: it consists of a stack of parallel layers containing metallic elements and layers of aluminosilicates. This quality gem is soluble in certain acids, for example hydrochloric acid. It should be noted that while chlorites most often have a triclinic crystal system, seraphinite stone is monoclinic.
